School Teaches Local Kids Circus Arts Last Updated: Raising kids can be like walking on a high wire. If your darlings have you at the end of your rope, why not send them off to join the circus? One local school teaches youngsters everything under the Big Top. In a Park Boulevard storefront, a limber group of students are hanging around literally taking tips from the pros and learning. Sophia Isadora's Academy of Circus Arts is the only school, where being suspended is a good thing. "Two of our students are auditioning for the circus school in Montreal," Cheryl Lindley said. "Some of them will have careers in circus and our teachers are all circus performers," she added. "Other kids, I've had parents tell me that it's created more focus in everything they do, especially school." For some students, it's a chance to face their fears head on. Isabel joined the academy of circus arts last summer, her mother couldn't be prouder. "It's terrific because she's gaining skills, confidence and enjoying herself," her mother said. "They're really great about safety and the kids are harnessed, when they do the higher activities and there's someone always spotting them." At this school, they don't worry about dropouts they know most of these students will hanging around long after graduation. Copyright 2005 Midwest Television |
