SAN DIEGO -- If you've ever had to choose a summer camp
for your child, you know that it's not an easy thing to do.
San Diego has a camp for almost every interest. So this week,
10News is taking a look at some of your choices.
Tuesday, 10News profiled a day camp for anyone who's ever
dreamed of being in the circus.
Riding a unicycle and swinging on the trapeze are just part of
the routine for campers at the Sophia Isadora Academy of
Circus Arts in University Heights.
When 13-year-old Jessica Dauti heard of the academy, she said
she signed up right away.
"The first thing that came to my mind was, 'Ooh, cool.' When
do you get an opportunity to do that? The first day here I had
so much fun, and I wanted to come back," said Dauti.
Students ages 5 and up can enroll for the weekly sessions.
Cheryl Lindley is a professional circus performer and the
academy's co-founder.
She said kids choose her school for different reasons.
"We have some kids that already want to go pro, and some just
need a different activity and circus sounds fun," said Lindley.
Students stretch and condition and learn a variety of skills
during the camp.
"This is the Spanish web -- the chiffon. This is the cube. We
have juggling, we have the diablo, which is the Chinese yo-yo. We have a unicycle, an unsupported ladder, acrobatics, pyramid
building and foot juggling," said Lindley.
Duke DiEugenio, 7, will be at the academy this summer.
"I like to get in here and get active," said DiEugenio.
"The main thing anyone would gain not having any circus
experience, or even athletic, is the ability to achieve
something that seemed impossible because when you first see
this, it seems that no one can do it. And I tell them, 'You
can do anything with lots of hard work,'" said Lindley.
Summer camps at the Sophia Isadora Academy of Circus Arts
run from June 26 through Aug. 11.
Half-day sessions are $100 a week, and full-day sessions are
$200 a week.
